So, most of my thoughts these days revolve around Merlin (the show, the character, the actor... I'm a little besotted)
AREN'T WE ALL???
I had no idea I was thinking about this at all until I read this. Funny that.
You bring up very very good points and cover so many of my frustrations. And while at times I want to throttle Uther for being so *gr* I can see why he does what he does. And when you harbor something like what he feels for so long, it festers and grows and really blinds you to anything else. I feel for him, I really do.
And as far as Merlin killing right away. I think it has to do with him just doing what's necessary, ya know? I've read fic that explore Merlin's vulnerability after killing someone - but people tend to forget he's already killed. Several times. ALL FOR ARTHUR.
And that's the thing right? I mean, with original Merlin lore Merlin is rather well...Merlin-esque. He's not the Merlin we love on this show. So maybe by showing Merlin's lack of reluctance to kill someone for Arthur it's they're way of bringing a bit of legend!Merlin to the fore? Does that make sense?
Back to Arthur - we know that Merlin is very willing to do anything for Arthur, anything - so it doesn't surprise me at all that he kills for him. Non whatsoever. Even with the first episode I didn't really see it as Merlin killing the crazy witch lady, I just saw it as him protecting Arthur. (You know, DESTINY and all that)
As for magic being so obviously inherintly evil in the show, I blame Uther. It's his fault with his hatred and his bitterness and his GUILT. Because you know he feels ABSOLUTE GUILT with what happened to his lovely queen. And the bad buys all being evil sorcerers and such, it just works because the shows about Merlin. We need to see him do good (so to say) in order to protect Arthur and the future of Camelot. And for Albion.
